Want to learn more about getting around Moodle?

check out this document on navigating around a Moodle class

Workshop Survey

A survey went out last week about potential afterschool workshops. Please take a minute to fill it out. It is only one question and will help us create workshops based around technology integration.

If you can't make it to a worksop there are two other options available:
  1. If you would like some help during a class or have a free period on Monday or Thursday mornings Joe can work with you one-on-one or in a small group.
  2. Joe can also put together mini-manuals for various software and websites to help you and your class.

Tech Tips #4 - MassCue, Progress Reports, and More Lesson Plan Help

Why not get started planning to use more online resources in the classroom?

Google provides lesson plan ideas that leverage their free services and applications.

Check it out here

Entering Mid-Term Progress Reports into MMS

Check out the pdf version here
Teachers at the Essex Agricultural and Technical High School complete mid-term progress reports on their students every quarter. This document steps you through the process of entering the mid-term progress report data into MMS via the teacher portal.
Launch a Web Browser

Launch a web browser and enter https://sis.agtech.org/mmsgb/Teacher

Login to Portal

The website will then load. Depending on site load and whether this is the first connection, the site may take some time to load. Once it does, you will see the login prompt pictured below. Enter the Username and the Password you use when logging on to the MMS Teacher Portal. When you have finished, click on the Login button to complete the sign-in process.

Click on Grade Book

The main portal page will then load. In the toolbar, you will see a Grade Book button. Click on this link.

Select Course

A list of your courses for the term will then appear. Click on the name of the course for which you wish to enter the Mid-Term Progress Report.

Click on Assign Grades

The course summary page for the course showing assignments and averages for each student will then display. Once it does, in the toolbar, click on the Assign Grades button.

Click on Final Grade Entry

The Grade Book Assign Grades page will then display. On this page, click on the Final Grade Entry link.

Select Bin

The page will refresh to display Final Grade Entry, and will prompt you to select a bin. From the Bin drop-down, select the bin appropriate for the applicable mid-term progress report: for the midterm of the first quarter, select the bin ending in MT1; for the second quarter, select the bin ending in MT2; and so on.

Select Comments

The Grade Book Assign Grades page will then display. The names of your students will appear in wide rows in alternating colors of white and blue. For each student select up to four comments from the Comment #1, Comment #2, Comment #3, and Comment #4 fields. You do not need to complete all four fields, but complete them sequentially: do not select a comment for Comment #2 and leave Comment #1 blank.

Enter Teacher Notes

In addition to the selectable comments, you may also enter in one custom note for each student. You may do this by entering in your note into the Teacher Note field. The Teacher Note field is highlighted in the image.

Save Final Grades

When you have completed your comments for all of your students, click on the Save Final Grades button to save your work.

Note Saved Changes

At the top of the page, a red message will display at the top of the page stating Your changes have been added to the system. This is your confirmation that your comments were saved. The message is highlighted in the image .

Return to Course List
Be sure to log yourself out of the system by clicking on the Logout button!

"What Is This Moodle I Keep Hearing About?"

"And what exactly is a Moodle?"

Moodle (abbreviation for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is a free source e-learning software platform, also known as a Course Management System, Learning Management System, or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Moodle has several features considered typical of an e-learning platform, plus some original innovations (like its filtering system). Moodle is very similar to a learning management system. Moodle can be used in many types of environments such as in education, training and development, and business settings.

Some typical features of Moodle are

  • Assignment submission
  • Discussion forum
  • Files download
  • Grading
  • Moodle instant messages
  • Online calendar
  • Online news and announcement (College and course level)
  • Online quiz
  • Wiki

Check out this video using Legos to illustrate Moodle and its benefits.

Now when a student "misplaces" the handout they know where to go to get another one.

Not sure how to do this? Check out the step-by-step directions here and start using Moodle.

Hurricane Irene Precautions
Posted by Kyle Jones on 28 August 2011 08:48 AM

Hurricane Irene is presently moving into the area.  The Essex Aggie Technology Department is actively monitoring the situation.

If wind and weather conditions threaten power outages, brownouts, etc., I will direct a shutdown of our technology infrastructure and servers in order to minimize any potential data loss. If this happens, access to the cloud/Citrix, the technology website, MMS, and the like will be interrupted until such time as we deem it safe to restart them.

We appreciate your understanding while we work to insure the safety and integrity of our systems and data.
